Cuba
The Struggle for Consumption
Anna C. Pertierra
Book excerpt:
"The daily experiences of being a consumer in a society where consumption is largely experienced as frustration and an absence of desirable goods has come for many Cuban to be emblematic of the shifts that Cuba has undergone since 1990, in the post-Soviet economic transformation that is officially and vernacularly described as the "Special Period" (Periodo Especial)....
For Cuban residents in cities such as Santiago de Cuba, the net result of the economic transformation of Cuba has been that income discrepancies and social differentiation have increased in comparison to the Soviet socialist decades of the 1960s-1980s. By the late 1990s the estimated disparity in income between poorest and richest Cubans had gone from 4:1 to 25. Race and class have reemerged as telling indicators of social status to a degree that was less apparent during Soviet socialism."
