Caribbean Landscapes
An Interpretive Atlas
Timothy S. Brothers, Jeffrey S. Wilson and Owen P. Dwyer |
Book excerpt: From the Preface: The Geographical Perspective on the Caribbean
Our purpose is not merely to describe the landscapes shown here but to interpret them: set them in broader geographic and historical context. This is the difficult but crucial step that makes geography more than just a collection of facts about unique places. Fortunately, the Caribbean is a geographer's paradise. There cannot be many regions that illustrate such a wealth of geographic themes. A brief list might include the role of islands in the evolution of natural and human communities; the variable accommodation between the physical environment and human settlement; the dichotomy between plantation and subsistence agriculture; the emergence of new "creole" forms from African, European, East Indian and indigenous roots; the lingering imprint of colonialism in post-colonial landscapes; the multiple paths taken toward political and economic independence in developing countries; and the tension bewteen homogenization and diversity in the era of globalization." |
