Memoir of an Amnesiac [Mmoire d'une Amnsique]
Jan J. Dominique, translated by Irline Franois, associate professor of Women's Studies, Goucher College, Baltimore, Maryland
Book review:
"Memoir of an Amnesiac is a work of several dimensions: memoir, novel, roman clef. In one facet it is an especially privileged and personal view of the Haitian journalist Jean Dominique, redoubtable until his assassination in the year 2000. In another, it is a sophisticated study of the paradoxical relationship between memory and fabrication. In a third, it is a veiled but vivid account of life under a regime which suppresses not only action but also thought. This fluent translation by Irline Francois has made a somewhat challenging French text not only accessible but even seductive to American readers."
Madison Smartt Bell

"The rehashing of events approximates the machinations of memory. The ordering of the facts of a capricious consciousness is done by writing, an activity the narrator is constantly reflecting upon and for which she is always trying to stake out adequate space in her life. Although literal translations do occur, Irline Francoiss translation is fluid; she should be commended for her success in making more Haitian literature available in English."
